Mojo is registered as a dark brown but she is a solid bay black. And she has blue eyes. And extremely fine fiber, which is rare in blacks. Her AFD at 20 months of age was 19.1, at 4 years, 8 months old, her AFD was 17.2 and she still posted an AFD of 27.8 at 12 years, 8 months of age.
Mojo has short (4 inch) staple length and zero lock structure, so she will never win a halter show; but her fiber has such velvety soft handle that it is an absolute joy to spin. The resulting yarn is a warm, lively black color, with velvety luster and softness. The Judges Choice Award for handspun skeins at the 2022 Suri Network Fleece Show was won by a skein of 50% Mojo and 50% yak.
After we purchased Mojo, we spent three years trying to breed her with no success. Finally, in October of 2020, we bred her to our own Padre Pio. After a couple of weeks, we spit tested her with a male and…nothing. Mojo just stood there calmly eating her hay-no spitting, shrieking or running away. A week later, we tested her again with the same result. We decided that Mojo was apparently no longer fertile and that we would just enjoy her company and her fiber. When we participated in the SHIP program in April 2021, we left Mojo at home with the non-breeding females. In September of 2021, we returned from a 5 day mini vacation to find Mojo in the process of giving birth to Mochalico, a dark brown male with long lustrous locks . Mocha has grown into a beautiful yearling who shimmers when he walks.
Mojo update: Mojo's 2023 cria was a dystocia and was stillborn. Given her age and that this was her second consecutive dystocia, we have retired Mojo from our breeding program, although she will always be a valued member of our herd.
